Stratigraphic column representing the Holocene deposits found along the Khebir al Janoubi River, Bouqaia Basin

Geo-Archaeology

We aim to describe the geomorphological, sedimentological and edaphic processes characterising the region during the final moments of the Pleistocene and the Holocene, at the time when human groups were undergoing the transition from hunter-gatherer subsistence to a farming economy.

Our research includes surveying, cartography, and sampling of geomorphological, sedimentary and pedological units. Based on our survey and the use of Corona satellite photography and geological maps (Geological Map of Syria, 1963, 1:200,000), we have produced a preliminary geomorphological map of the Bouqaia Basin and a scheme of the main sedimentary sequences. We have also commenced the systematic cataloguing of soils and anthropic palaeo-soils.
