Abstract: The appearance of the capacity to haft stone tools has revolutionized prehistoric tool use. Hafting reflects an ability to plan and anticipate future needs and it has an impact on how stone tools are conceived and used. Given the various functional needs the decision to haft a tool may respond to, stone tools are not necessarily systematically hafted once the expertise is available.

Hafting may thus provide an interesting and alternative way to reflect upon past lifeways and organization. The results of a few Middle Palaeolithic case studies are presented and the interaction between hafting, tool use and site function is highlight.
