VIII Seminar of Prehistoric Technology

Research group Archaeology of Social Dynamics

The exploitation of obsidian in the western Mediterranean was a recurrent phenomenon in the prehistory of the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian areas of the Italic Peninsula, as well as the great islands of this basin: Corsica and Sardinia. The sources of this raw material are located in four Italian islands: Sardinia, Lipari, Palmarola and Pantelleria, and their lithic productions were widely distributed during the Neolithic period, reaching the French Midi, as well as the Northeast of the Iberian Peninsula.

In addition to the question of its geochemical characterization and the determination of its origin, the Seminar will focus on the study of the techniques applied in the production of blade tools in the Neolithic of the Western Mediterranean. We will particularly examine indirect percussion and pressure knapping according to different modalities, in addition to the experimental reproduction of said productions.
Finally, we will approach its prehistoric uses based on functional (use-wear) analysis through the study of its traces of use.

All this results in a holistic approach to these productions that had a relevant role in the first moment of the neolithization, as well as in the Middle Neolithic when networks of interchange were instituted that led to their distribution in a large geographical area within the Western Mediterranean.
